White Hot

White jeans, now here is a trend I have always loved on others but was never confident enough to try at home. However, facing my third summer in the United States, I felt it was time to shake off my insecurities and give white jeans a chance. I got a pair of Citizens of Humanity jeans and I have to say I think I am converted. They are a slightly warmer white than the bright whites sold by most other brands, they have just enough stretch (2% to be exact), and aren't at all transparent (a big fear of mine).

Now I have taken the leap into white jean territory, I have been scouring the internet for different ways to wear them. I am a casual girl at heart but I love how Kate Moss and Sienna Miller paired theirs with a charcoal blazer to take the look to the next level. My favourite look though is Kate Bosworth's, now all I need to do is find a printed silk tee and I will be on my way to rocking white jeans in style.

Malibu Dream House

Images from Elle Decor by Simon Upton

Staying in LA, today I want to share with you the amazing home of Courtney Cox I spied on Elle Decor. I am in love with just about every detail of this house, especially that jaw-droppingly stunning view. The house uses such a simple colour palette of white, grey and wood, in contrast with the lush green and blue surrounds. Quirky art lurks around every corner of the home adding punch to the simple white walls. Large windows hold the ocean views in every room, and large French doors bring the outside in. This is helped by the use of slate tiles both inside the home and out on the deck, visually joining the two into one.

The house was originally designed by modernist architect John Lautner but was a little dark for Cox's taste, so was given an revamp by architect Michael Kovac. The interiors were designed by Trip Haenisch, a good friend of Cox's. Of the two Cox said “Michael and Trip gave me everything I wanted. This is exactly how I want to live.” Here's to that!

Santa Monica Before Breakfast

{Images from my phone, edited with Pixlr}

I love waking up so close to the Pacific Ocean. Knowing that Australia is just an ocean between us, and smelling the familiar fresh salty air is part of what makes me love being on the West Coast so much. We woke up early this morning and went for a walk along the beach in Santa Monica, past the pier and palm trees. It was so nice to be up early on this cool spring morning. There were plenty of fit people (much fitter than us, but we aspire to be that fit soon!) taking advantage of such a nice morning on the beach. What a way to start the day!

Pastel Dream

1. Hudson Jeans / 2. Girl. by Band of Outsiders Jacket
3. Essie Nail Polish in Looking for Love  / 4. Zara Heels
5. Zara Lace Top & Shorts / 6. Coach Handbag

Inspired by all of the beautiful pastel looks I have been seeing lately, I thought I would dedicate today's post to all of the sherbet shades I am loving for spring/summer. The above picture of a stunning sunrise (or is it a sunset, I'm not sure?) captures every shade of pastel that I am planning to wear as the weather heats up. They are pale perfection!

View From The Weekend

Wandering around the city over the weekend it struck us just how many trees have begun to blossom all around us. I couldn't help but stop and take pictures of the beauty that was lurking down almost every side street. Even with the cloudy weather we had over the weekend, it is clear that spring is making it's appearance in New York - and I am so happy about that!

Today I am off to LA so I will be attempting to blog from the West Coast this week. Hopefully keeping you updated with all of the fun things I am seeing and doing over the other side of the country for a change. I really enjoy the change of pace in LA so I am very much looking forward to getting there. Bye for now!

Belated Birthday Wishes

This week It Started in New York turned one! I seemed to have missed this fact in my jet-lag fog on Wednesday but now I am feeling much more clear headed I thought I better give my blog its dues. I started writing It Started in New York as a way to occupy myself and do something creative. I was never sure where it would lead me, and I'm still not sure where it's going, but I very much enjoy writing it all the same.

Thank you to you, my lovely readers, for reading my blog over the past year and for all the lovely comments you leave. Some of the kind messages I get honestly make my day, and certainly make continuing to write all the more worthwhile.

Fresh Pairing

No two colours go together quite as well as navy and white. It is one of the freshest combinations I can think of. It makes me think of fresh ocean air and crisp clean sheets. There is no denying that I am drawn to this colour combination in all of its variations (especially nautical stripes). I would love to have a house full of lovely navy and white china like the bottom right image, and there is already no shortage of this combination in my wardrobe! What colour combination speaks most to you?
